What is component 3a and why do we need it?
Component 3a of Danielson's Framework for teaching is communicating with students. As teachers, it is essential that we can communicate effectively with our students for various reasons. Teachers need to have effective communication for activities, rules and procedures, instruction, and the benefit of student learning; with proper use of communication students will be able to think, imagine, learn, participate in meaningful activities, and gain a deeper knowledge of language. Teachers also communicate that learning is a purposeful activity, that students can enjoy and have fun while still learning. Effective communication should be used with the best interest of students' success and learning in mind. Without it , students would lost and confused, and we, as teachers, would have missed the mark and failed our students; communication is, like a bridge, a scaffold to learning.
What are the elements?
Component 3a has 4 elements: expectations for learning, directions and procedures, explanations of content, and use of oral and written language. Expectations for learning are the goals for learning in the classroom. These expectations are important to student learning so that they can clearly understand and recognize what they have accomplished or learned in the lesson, even when it is not explicitly stated at the beginning or start of the lesson. If this is true of our classroom, then we are making proper and effective use of communication. Directions and procedures are important and crucial for structure and order of a classroom; without them, there is the potential for danger, distraction, chaos, and disordered learning. As teachers, instructions should be clearly stated so that students know what they must accomplish and how to accomplish it; procedures should be properly reviewed and discussed so that students know how they can accomplish different tasks and actions that are crucial to the class. If we as teachers can accomplish this, then our students with be provided with the tools and keys to unlock their learning. Explanations of content means that we as teachers can properly and effectively teach our students during instruction. This can include providing different materials, resources, models, and examples to best explain and present the information to students. We should also be able to communicate the information to all learners and be prepared to manipulate and change how we are presenting the content to fit the needs of students. When communicating, teachers should make use of descriptive language, analogies, metaphors, and other tools so that students can relate and visualize that information. Our lessons should also involve students' interests and any clarifications of common misconceptions or flaws in common knowledge. Use of oral and written language means that we present information with words that are best fit to the students and still allow for them to develop a rich understanding of language. Often times, how we use our words and word-choice can influence what students learn and takeaway from lessons. This means that it is important that we have students in mind when selecting what to communicate and how to communicate it. Sometimes, teachers can choose to leave out some details so that students are able to accomplish learning on their own. Regardless, the goal should be to give students the best opportunity for success and learning.
