What is component 4f and why is it important?
Component 4f of Danielson's Framework is all about showing professionalism. Not matter the career, professionalism is a crucial and vital quality in the workforce. In education, it is important that teachers maintain a professionalism in all aspects, whether it be in appearance, for the profession, or for the students. A key aspect of this professionalism is that the teacher puts the students first, regardless of previously held assumptions, past practices, or convenience; another key factor is maintaining a strong moral compass. Educators display there professionalism in a number of different ways: conducting interactions with colleagues out of honesty and integrity, are current with the latest technologies and resources available to students, provide help to students that extends beyond the classroom, advocate for students in finding ways to apply rules and policies in place, approach problem-solving with professionalism, and adhering with school policies and improving those that are out-of-date or ineffective. All of these actions demonstrate professionalism that allows for you to extend beyond just teaching material; there is more to teaching than just in-class work.
What are the elements?
Component 4f is comprised of 5 elements: integrity and ethical conduct, service to students, advocacy, decision-making, and compliance with school and district regulations. Integrity and ethical conduct means having a strong moral compass and being able to discern right from wrong when interacting with students, disciplining, or engaging in socialization with colleagues. Interactions are also carried out with honesty, as well. Service to students means that the teacher puts the students first in all considerations of the profession. No matter what you do or say, it should be done with the best intentions for growing your students and giving them the best opportunities for learning and success. Advocacy means that the teacher supports their students' best interests. This can look like supporting students that participate in sports by going to their games, or if they are in the arts, going to their shows or performances. If a student is in a hard position, the teacher finds a way to help the student, or find ways to have the rules or policies apply to their situation. Decision-making means that the teacher solves problems regarding students with their best interests in mind, but also in a fair, just, and ethical approach; the teacher finds a way to meet the students' needs in this, as well. Compliance with school and district regulations means that the teacher does not break the regulations in place or take advantage of the rules. To maintain professionalism, the teacher should adhere to the rules and policies. If the rules are extreme and cannot be met, or inapplicable, then the teacher advocates for adjustment, with the students' best interests in mind.
