Managing Classroom Procedures
What is Component 2c?
Every classroom needs to be able to function cleanly and smoothly before starting the process of higher level thinking and learning. We as teachers need to be to be able provide, monitor, and manage our class. Component 2c is all about managing classroom procedures. We can manage our class procedures through management of instructional groups, management of transitions, management of materials and supplies, and performance of non-instructional duties.
Why do we need it?
Throughout teaching, there are so many opportunities for great moments or chaos. It is not during instruction, but those "down-times", like transitions or group work, when there is opportunity for it to get out of hand. Being able to redirect students and keep them focused is key.
What are the elements?
The elements of 2c are management of instructional groups, management of transitions, management of materials and supplies, and performance of non-instructional duties. Management of instructional groups means that students are able to work in groups with minimal teacher supervision. Providing ways to give them work that is engaging, but also selecting groups intentional can help with this. Management of transitions means being able to have smooth transitions from activity to activity, from place to place, or large-group work to small-group/individual work. These times can be helped by having a routine that students know and can repeat numerous times. Management of materials and supplies means being able to manage student use of different tools, like proper use, routine of distribution/collection, and keeping students engaged throughout. This is really important if dealing with tools that can be dangerous, as well. Performance of non-instructional duties means that the activities that are non-instructional, or where students are not learning, are smooth. This could look like attendance, distributing/collection of forms/papers that were sent home, etc.
What can we use to help establish and maximize this?
There are some tools that we can use to help with this available to us. One thing that helps is having a PLN that allows us to collaborate and discover ideas from other teachers. Another thing that can help is finding ways to involve and engage students. One way to do this is assign classroom jobs for the tasks, like weather, attendance, distribute materials, collect materials, etc. You can also consider the ways that you set up/design your room so that it allows for ability to view all students and also keep it structured and engaging.
