Domain 1 is about planning and preparation; when we look at the teaching process, it makes sense that the first domain is about how to plan and prep. Everything we do as teachers start with that foundation of planning and preparation. The best teachers of impact start here and really have a mastery of this domain. If we are not prepared to teach or have plans of how we will accomplish the goal of bettering teachers success and learning, then we are doing our students a disservice. Another key part of the domain is constantly revising these to best fit the needs of our students; no class or student is the same as another. Much of the domain also includes knowledge of content and pedagogy on the part of the teacher. To truly make proper use of this domain and out teaching, we must start at the basics and then build from there. Whether it be finding useful resources and technology to implement in the class, or setting instructional outcomes, or having a personal relationships with our students, there is a key need for domain 1 in the classroom.
What are the components in Domain 1?
Domain 1 has so many applications to the field; whether it is technologies or resources, or the models we use and follow, or even how we as teachers plan and prepare for our instruction, there is a reoccurring need for the domain. In my contact and connection with teachers in the field, there is one in particular that stands out. This teacher's school specifically uses not just domain 1 but all of Danielson's Framework to help with teacher observations and evaluations of effectiveness. This is really helpful in holding teachers accountable but also encouraging them to constantly be using the framework and different tools to have the best learning experience and possibility for learning in the classroom. The fact that much of how you as an educator are evaluated is based on this framework and domain shows the importance of it for teachers. Specifically with domain 1, this teacher tries to always have the most current resources and tools available to students; whether it is technology, books, or materials, the goal is to provide students with the best opportunity for learning.
