What is component 4d and why is it important?
Component 4d of Danielson's Framework is all about participating in a professional community. As a teacher, you are a part of a school comprised of educators. While the building is meant to promote the learning of students, it is also very important that the teachers work with their colleagues to share strategies, plan joint efforts, and plan for the success of individual students. When teachers realize that they are part of an entire professional community, they are then best able to better student success and learning. This community should be characterized by mutual support and respect, as well as by the recognition of the responsibility of all teachers to be seeking ways to improve their practice and contribute to the the life of the school. This community does include the school itself, but it also includes the larger district, surrounding schools/districts, and even onto the global setting through PLNs, like Twitter, Pinterest, etc. It is apparent that the duties and activities of teachers extend beyond the classroom. For all teachers, it is important to be seeking new ways to learn and collaborate, maintaining a growth mindset throughout.
What are the elements?
Component 4d is comprised of 4 elements: relationships with colleagues, involvement in a culture of professional inquiry, service to the school, and participation in the school's and district's projects. Relationships with colleagues means that teachers maintain a professional, collegial relationship that encourages collaboration, sharing, planning, and working together to improve instruction and student learning. This collaboration is extremely important for developing as a teacher, as well as building a support group of teachers. The main focus should always be to improve instruction and student success. Involvement in a culture of professional inquiry means that the teachers build a community that supports, respects and encourages the effort to improve practice. This can be through research, professional development, asking questions, and finding new ways to learn. This development is important to the individual and the community, in terms of professionalism and providing the best for students. Service to the school and participation in those projects and initiatives go hand-in hand. This means that all efforts of teachers and the school move beyond the classroom, by creating and participating in school initiatives and projects. The teachers should play a key role in sponsoring these projects and encouraging the involvement of students in creation and participation as well. This can look like having different events that involve teachers, like "Hop for Leukemia", "Student vs Staff" basketball, "Project Water", and other initiatives and projects. Teacher involvement allows for motivation of students and being "all-in". If students see that teachers passionate about these projects, then they are very likely to reciprocate the same passion. It is also very important that when teachers are creating and sponsoring these events that they include students to help in creation. This can be accomplished by creating student boards or committees that are directly involved in the creation processes. By doing this, it allows for students to personalize and relate to the projects to the larger student body; it also gives them experience in developing skills that are very useful in society, beyond education.
