What is component 3e and why do we need it?
Component 3e of Danielson's Framework is all about demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness. As teachers, we need to be able to understand and assess where are students are at, and then interpreting those evaluations and assessments and determining where to go from there. We also need to be able to actively listen to and understand our students; often times what we plan and what they need are two completely different things, so being able to adapt a lesson and change it as needed it vital. As a teacher, you need to be able to act and react appropriately; this could mean changing a lesson completely, or considering to review materials, or finding different resources and tools that fit student interests. If we present something to students and they do not take interest, then we must find something new that does interest and engage them; finding a new approach, a different tool, a new mindset, or idea can help with being persistent in teaching students.
What are the elements?
Component 3e is comprised of 3 elements: lesson adjustment, response to students, and persistence. Lesson adjustment is all about being able to create a lesson that presents the information in an effective, basic way, and then being able to change, tweak, and modify the lesson according to how students are learning, what they need, and how they respond. A key part of this is also being able to adjust with confidence and being prepared to make those adjustments. A good teacher is always prepared and never caught off-guard. Response to students means that as a teacher, you listen to and watch for signs of whether or not students are learning. By taking those responses, we can determine how or what needs to be changed in the lesson. A good teacher lets the students drive where the specific focus of lesson goes, with the main ideas of the overall objective of the lesson still in place. Persistence is a very crucial trait for teachers to have. When students encounter struggles and challenges, the teacher does not give up. Rather, they find a way to help the students conquer the goal. This involves the other elements of this component and other ideas, as well. The main point is that a lesson should always be written with the knowledge that students will react in different ways, they will most likely need to adjust the lesson, and that their should be a way for students to react and respond to the lesson in the lesson itself.
