Domain 3 is about instruction. Everything we do as teacher revolves around how we teach; this domain is the culmination of the other domains. Yes, we need the other domains, but it is important to keep in mind that we grow, plan, and prepare as teachers for our instruction. Lesson planning, implementing assessments, communicating with students, and making adjustments to our lessons are all elements of this domain. Much of what makes a teacher a teacher of impact can be found in this domain. It is so important that our lessons and instruction are inclusive to all learners, provide the best thing for our students, adaptable, flexible, and made with the intentions of meeting the students' needs. If we do not have strong instruction, everything else will fall apart; instruction is the key to learning and success of students.
What are the components in Domain 3?
Domain 3 is very critical in the field; it is a delicate subject, that is either met beautifully or is a tragedy in the making. In my relations, contact, and observations of teachers in the field, there is one that stands out to me. This teacher really puts forth effort when writing her lesson plans and wants the lesson to meet the needs of students. Sometimes her lessons go smoothly, and other times they can be rough. Regardless, her focus is to always to have a positive mindset and find ways to adjust and change what she is doing so that her students can overcome whatever is hindering their learning. For her she always leaves room for flexibility in her lesson plans and is sure to include formative assessments implemented throughout her lessons that are both formal and informal. She uses these assessments to gauge herself and her students' learning. Some of her favorite tools to help with Domain 3 are Nearpod and Kahoot. These tools really allow her to implement her lessons and assessments. Her key to success is always being open, responsive, and constantly evaluating her students so that she knows that they are on the best path to success.
