What is component 3c and why do we need it?
Component 3c is engaging students in learning. Student engagement is a central part of teaching; if our students are not engaged, then they will not truly understand or gain much from the class. It is important that we build relationships with students; from these relationships that are both academic and personal, we can better find ways to engage our students in learning and make an impact. Engaged is more than just being on task and busy. For students to be truly learning, they are intellectually and physically active and engaged; students are able to find ways to apply it to themselves, their lives, interests, society, among other things. The students are developing understanding through what they do. If we as teachers cannot engage students, then we have missed the mark; their learning is not based on memorable, sensory-rich experiences that are personal, but rather memorization of terms and facts that will not stick for very long. Students are able to build schema, take away something, and see the big picture. This component really allows us to think and understand how we can engage students in a way that allows for understanding.
What are the elements?
Component 3c has 4 elements: activities and assignments, grouping of students, instructional materials and resources, and structure and pacing. Activities and assignments means that our tasks that we give to students daily are a focal point of engagement. Our activities should allow for choice in students, emphasize depth over breadth, and are aligned with goals of the class. If we are able to accomplish this, our students not only will be engaged but understanding and developing the content in a way that is truly meaningful and personal. Grouping of students means that teacher are intentional over choice to have preselected groups, random, or chosen by students. Different activities call for different measures. Sometimes the choice allows for more engagement, and other times it can lead to distraction. Being able to distinguish which works best is important as we want the best for student learning. Instructional materials and resources means that we select resources and materials that are used in class based off of the interests of students; it is applicable and personal. If the materials are personal, it allows for a true learning and understanding of content. Structure and pacing means that we are able to gauge students needs and interests to determine how that class should be run. Sometimes students can become disengaged by class that move slower; other classes can become disengaged if the class has too much structure and no room for creativity or student choice. Finding a balance is key; engaged does not mean that we cater to every desire of students, but they we are giving them what they need and what is best for the learning of all.
