What is Component 2e?
Component 2e of Danielson's framework entails organizing physical space. Whether it be by use of the classroom or different areas and tools, the goal is to enhance student learning. This means use of a PLN and different tools to collaborate and learn new ways to optimize the learning space. Students learn best when the environment is fit to their needs. As a teacher, one must find ways to meet those needs. There are two elements that are a part of component 2e: safety and accessibility, and arrangement of furniture and use of physical resources.
Why do we need it?
As stated earlier, our goal as teachers it to optimize student learning and meeting their needs. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to follow and use the component as a guideline. If we are unable to make the best are for learning we are failing our students. Another factor of the component is also safety; if our classroom does not meet this guidelines, then we are not fulfilling our job in making the safest possible environment for our students. There is so much importance on having a room geared for learning; if you don't believe it, kids won't either. The main idea is that if your classroom is not fun or safe, you are not optimizing student potential.
What are the elements?
The elements include safety and accessibility, and arrangement of furniture and use of physical resources. Safety and accessibility means that if students are not safe then no learning can occur. We as teachers should make sure that our classroom provide a safe environment for all, not just physically but emotionally as well. Arrangement of furniture and use of physical resources means that the teacher takes advantage of the endless possibilities of the classroom. This can look like creating different areas for different tasks; maybe there is a reading corner for reading time, maybe there is a corner for cool technology, maybe there is an area for math, the possibilities are endless. There are other ideas on what to do with seating. Obviously this can be limited to a number of factors, like size of class in terms of number or size of class in terms of dimensions. Still the ideas could be maybe have different seating arrangements, use exercise balls as chairs, maybe there's different kinds of desk. The ideas are endless. Use of PLN, again, can really help with getting ideas or just creating new things that have yet to be done
