What are the elements?
Component 4e is comprised of 3 elements: enhancement of content knowledge and pedagogical skill, receptivity to feedback from colleagues, and service to the profession. Enhancement of content knowledge and pedagogical skill means that teachers remain current by taking courses, reading professional literature, and remaining current on the evolution of thinking regarding instruction. This development is important so that you are best able to provide resources and tools to teach students, and it also allows you to have new approaches to different situations that you would not have considered previously. Receptivity to feedback from colleagues means that the criticisms and ideas that they give to you on your work, whether positive or negative, is strongly considered. The teacher should also be sure to understand their perspectives and make changes where necessarily. Service to the profession means that the teachers are actively involved in professional organizations so that they are able to continually improve their personal practice and provide leadership and support to colleagues. This is great for building relationships and connections with other teachers that you can use for help, aid, advice, etc. By being involved in these professional organizations, you are also building knowledge of your specific content area, especially in higher levels of education. All of these elements combine to allow for the best growth and development of the teacher so that they are best able to meet the needs of students.
