What is component 4b and why do we need it?
Component 4b of Danielson's Framework is all about maintaining accurate records of both instructional and non-instructional events. As teachers, we must keep track of students' assignments, progress, and items that are crucial to the classroom setting. These non-instructional items could include field trip forms, permission slips, money for school field trips, etc. These records are vital because they inform interactions with students and parents. If a student constantly fails to return items that are to be viewed by parents, the teacher is provided insight into their relationships. With this insight, the teacher can proceed to make adjustments, corrections, and accommodations, if necessary. This also is crucial to having a knowledge of how to form relationships with students and being involved in their lives. There are many different ways to record this events. For some, like grades, virtual grade-books, spreadsheets, or other online tools can be used. For others, like permission slips, checklists or anecdotal notes can be kept in student folders. Keeping record of all of these gives a professionalism and an ability to communicate with students and parents, build rapport, and follow the trends in different students.
What are the elements?
Component 4b is comprised of 3 elements: student completion of assignments, student progress in learning, and non-instructional records. For student completion of assignments, this means that the teacher keeps track not just student completion but also student degree of success. Often times, particularly at the secondary level, these assignments play a crucial role in whether or not students can pass the class, or even graduate. This record can also be crucial in engaging in interactions with students and parents. For student student progress in learning, this means that the teacher maintains a record of where each student stands in the learning process. This knowledge is important to the teacher so that they can determine where to begin with instruction, what areas need improvement, and what areas have been mastered. There are different ways to keep track of this progress, but it should be kept up-to-date. If a teacher does not have a knowledge of student progress, then they are essential teaching blind. This information truly plays a crucial role in lesson planning and how a teacher approaches instruction. For non-instructional records, this means that the teacher tracks all of the details and necessary elements for school life. Again, this can include permission slips, field-trip forms, money for pictures, etc. These are important because without them, the student can not participate or be involved in certain elements of learning and school. This knowledge is also crucial for having a knowledge of if accommodations or adjustments should be made for individuals.
