What is Component 1e?
Component 1e is designing coherent instruction. As teachers, we must first have an understanding of state, district, and school expectations for learning, and then transform those expectations into a coherent, applicable, and even innovative plan. We must have a knowledge and understanding of our students, how learn, and who they are; this comes from building relationships and really knowing our students on a personal level, not just an academic level. Once we have this knowledge, we can then thoughtfully design and create lesson plans that are cognitively engaging, incorporate appropriate materials and resources, and the intentional grouping of students. With these in combination, we then be best able to provide the best opportunity for all students to learn and be successful.
Why do we need it?
Component 1e is important because it builds our foundation for teaching; if we do not have a plan that meets these requirements, we will not prepared or able to best serve our students. We will face several different and diverse students and classes throughout our careers; this will require the constant updating and changing of our plans to best meet the needs of all students. This plan can also be crucial in helping to implement and incorporate different models and technologies to enhance student learning.
What are the elements?
Component 1e is comprised of 4 elements: learning activities, instructional materials and resources, instructional groups, and lesson and unit structure. Learning activities means that we incorporate engaging and useful activities to help further student learning and understanding. These activities can vary in length, size, and duration; the possibilities are endless. This also a great are to help incorporate different technologies. These activities could be projects, games, group work, etc; the point regardless of activity is that it truly furthers their knowledge and understanding of content. Instructional materials and resources means that we incorporate different types of videos, books, and other resources that are applicable to the class and meet the learning needs of students. Our resources should be applicable to today, the content, and the students. Instructional groups means that we not only make use of instructional groups in our classroom that we intentionally select and organize those groups in ways that will best help the students. Group-work has great potential because it allows for students to collaborate, communicate, and work together to achieve a common goal. Often times, some students can learn best through their peers and watching how others work. The skills that are developed through this can be outlined by the ISTE Standards for students. Lesson and unit structure means that our lessons and units are clear, organized, and adaptable to the differing needs of students; there is also the presence of a logically sequence to that organization.
